We believe the people closest to a story should have a voice in how it is told—and access to the opportunities created in telling it.

Depth of Field exists to expand who has the resources, mentorship, and authority to shape the stories through which we understand one another. We cultivate emerging filmmakers from communities historically underrepresented behind the camera, pairing professional documentary production with education, paid mentorship, and collaborative authorship.

Our work is designed to leave something behind. We build each production in partnership with the communities at its center, creating pathways for participants to develop their own creative practice and continue telling stories beyond the life of a single film.

And when our films succeed, that success circulates. Proceeds are reinvested into the filmmakers and communities who made the work possible—supporting future films, education, equipment, apprenticeships, and community-led initiatives.

Our vision is a documentary ecosystem in which storytelling does not simply extract stories from communities, but invests in the people who tell them—and expands who gets to shape our collective understanding of the world.
